Noticed that the spirea was putting out foliage, so it must have recovered from the drastic haircut I gave it.

I'm relieved to see that it came back, I did worry that I'd over done it a bit - never cut anything back that much before (even my drastic cutback of Shrub 15 wasn't quite htis extreme!). I'l try not to let this go to my head and become the "demon barber" on other plants, but at least it encourages me to be a bit firmer than I have been so far.

Spireas don't like stuff smothering them at the base. Those circle alliums smothered a spirea in the back garden and it died right back and I dug it up. The large one in the front garden has been damaged on one side by bluebells smothering it. It needs cutting right back too and hope it comes back as good as yours.

there were dozens of bulbs around the spirea - that was one reason I had to cut it back, it was stopping me getting at them! I've taken out all the junk that was around it, and planted some of those bulbs I took from the side bed, but kept them back to leave the spirea some room - even if they do come a bit close, they should be only seasonal, so won't be in the way all the time.

lol thankfully yes, Waddy! Maybe I did it at the right time, or it was long overdue and the shrub is showing its appreciation of having room to grow!

They are so resilient Fran. Cutting back seems to rejuvenate them.
