Its name is curious. I am physician, that is why the plantĀ“s adjective forced me to google on its usage in folk medicine, lol. I found, that it was used by native Americans for treatment of many diseases. However, syphilis was not existing in America and it was imported there, they couldn t use it for this disease. So the name must came from Europeans, who also used it (poultice of the root) in treating boils, ulcers and hard to heal sores...
However, it sounds interesting also from the view of respiratory medicine.

Now it looks like a Lobelia..which you might have planted there if it was bought as Lobelia cardinalis... but was mislabelled!?
