I know I know a bit wild lol, after a very dodgy afternoon last week balancing on the edge flinging water soldiers and parrots feather pondweed out in all directions, where does that stuff come from i never put it in, the fish can see the light again!! and are loving all the space, still need a few more water soldiers out I think but the green bins are both full plus all my own till next week.

If fish could say thank you I think they would. They do appreciate a bit of leg? room. I discarded a pink water lily last week, it was from my mothers pond 30 years ago, but it really was not suitable for a small pond.

I am so jealous....all that lovely water and greenery. My pond is more like a muddy puddle at this time of year. A combination of hot weather and a sneaky neighbour who puts a pump into the stream that feeds it, to water his veggies!

Thanks everyone :-)
I love seeing all the new babies each year Tommymoo, we started off with 10 fish around 12 years ago I daren't think how many are in there now, with the goldfish staying black for ages you don't see them well, there are loads!!!, as you probably know shubunkins get their colour straight away and there are some very tiny little ones with really pretty colours and markings.
Siris we have 3 lilies in here but it is quite a large pond, 8ft deep in the middle, the 1 to the right is right at the bottom and I won't be going in after it lol, remember OH lowering it in on a plank, but it shot of the end down to the depths and I thought that was the end of that!!, but it grew to the surface within weeks.
Aaaaw Maggie that's a shame can't you stick something in the end of his pipe/pump ;-)

A god job done Kathy. A right stinky job isnt it, Ive been in our brook today removing watercress. Ive put several water soldiers in our pond over the years and they drop to the bottom never to be seen again lol, probably its a good thing, wouldnt want them going mad, like yours, enough jobs to do without removing them :)

Do your fingernails stain black after pond work? Mine do, what's the solution? No pun intended!

It's strange they don't grow in yours Dawn, I know I gave a couple to a friend and she potted them up I forgot to tell her you just throw them in hers died, but as you can see I had plenty to give her some more, she said I thought the roots were a bit long lol.
Must admit I've never been in the pond too deep :-)
Don't know about Dawn Siris, her ponds more like a lake !!!! and really beautiful, but I wear rubber gloves I'm a bit of a wimp :-), OH made me an ingenious tool with a really long handle and hook on the end for raking out those soldiers and weed,I told him the rake worked fine but he likes to be helpful ;-)

Weird Kathy isnt it, was going to ask you to pop a couple of soldiers in my goodie box to try again but not sure now. Lol, your friend and the long roots, bless. The last lot I bought off ebay had no roots, hmmm. I wear gloves too although they fill up with water, I spent alot of time scrubbing my nails. Oh bless, Rob sounds like my John designing things, but I think to myself, just do the job for me rather than making me a tool, lol, like the time he got me a blow up boat so I could go in the pond to remove bullrushes, haha.

Lol they like to think they're helping don't they :-)
I've been cutting a laurel hedge this week there was just some tall bits I couldn't reach only asked him to hold the ladder!!,I'll do it he said came out with a flipping machette he was like a man possessed branches flying off trees forsythia massacred anything that got in his way really,I think he needs to stick to the grass cutting lol.
The blow up boat made me laugh hope he gave you a paddle too ;-)

Oh Kathy, I can just picture Rob, yep, the men do go a bit crazy at times. I prefer John to stick to the mowing too. Remember when Rob mowed into your day lillies - well, I noticed damage on my R. Canary bird, didnt think it was prospering and I caught him reversing into it with the mower, obvs a regular occurrence.
No, he didnt give me a paddle either, just a long stick to punt with.

Such a shame we do not have videos on here, these, goings on would be perfect candidates, good job I have a good imagination lol

They do their best, and grass mowing is such a boring job, but OH wouldn't think to edge the lawn.

Videos would be fun Dd. Siris, funnily enough a I have to do the edges like you too.

Aaaaaaaw thanks Bluebell :-)
Those water soldiers are just starting to rise to the surface again and by the looks of it there'll be a lot to pull out again , don't know what they do over the winter to multiply so fast ;-)
We do have a much smaller pond too without fish for the wildlife but they seem to prefer this one !

Are water soldiers another name for water iris? I would love to pop an iris in my container pond.
29 Mar, 2015
No Bluebell think its proper name is Stratiotes, it's the spikey plant in the picture that's floating in the water, it has little white flowers in the summer, quite pretty, and in winter sinks to the bottom of the pond, good for covering some of the pond surface but does increase very fast, I have a couple of iris in here the yellow flag iris and a variegated form too, they'll get to big for your pond I think but there are some lovely smaller ones :-)
Have you seen Dawns pond/lake? She's commented on this picture if you click on her picture it'll take you to her pictures omg it gives me pond envy lol.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. My net has not been great and I keep missing messages. It's been sorted now so hopefully no more wifi loss. I have pond envy now! Dawn's pond is beautiful and so big! I have a friend with a pond and I think he has those flowers in. I might have to go pond plant shopping soon - can feel the shopping itch lol
