Tommymoo, we live on Vancouver Island (in Pacific) on west coast of Canada and we do not get colder winters than you. Our winters are mild. We get lots of rain in the winter that is why we go south every year. I do not like grey skies. I do take my cannas out before winter (and dahlias). With all that rain they would rut in the ground. Mine would definitely be happier in SW France too. It is a big job taking all these tubers out, packaging them and storing them.

Klahanie, thank you very much for your reply. I didn't know your winters are milder than ours. I'm going to look at the map to look for Vancouver Island. I know how laborious it is to dig up canna tubers -- it took me 2 days to do it last year. Unfortunately I didn't pack/store them properly last winter and as a result, most of my tubers didn't survive. What a b*mmer after all the toil and trouble! Ironically, the ones I missed out on digging up does far better than the ones I dug up therefore I decided not to bother digging them up at all this coming winter.

Spectacular Klahanie!
Tommy . . . Vancouver Island is really lovely. We had a wonderful week there some years ago, enjoying the wild, wilderness feel, lakes and mountains (and very few tourists!). The ferry ride from Vancouver is delightful too, as it weaves between the smaller islands :)

Sheilabub,
I've never been to Canada and I know nothing about the country. I had this ignorant fixed idea/image that Canada is an incredibly cold, snowed-in-all-the-time type of the country but obviously it isn't. Thanks for your info ♪

:-) Most of the country fits your image Tommymoo.
Thank you Hywel and Sheila for your lovely comment.

Hi Klahanie,
I am curious about that head, which is behind the flowers. Is it head of Budha?
26 Aug, 2014
Yes it is Katarina. Surrounded by the variegated ivy.

What a magnificent statement those Canna's make

I find them very "showy". They make any dull corner (suddenly) noticeable. Do you grow any, Pansypotter?
26 Aug, 2014
I dont think I could find room for any I will just have to admire yours;0)

Beautiful!
Do you dig up yours before winter? -- I'm just curious because it's much colder in Canada than our place. I used to dig up all my cannas but I won't do that anymore because I've found out, after 5 years I had started to grow cannas, that they were happier that way in South West France.
