Rose 1

Rose 1

140914 - not looking well since it was moved - is it the time of year for it to look a bit rough? I wasn't around at this time last year
I'd appreciate pruning tips!!

It seems it died. Was it irrigated in last weeks? Because after replant you must irrigate the rose at least every other day.

P.S. What is that white powder around the rose?

It was well watered in, and it rained a lot after it was moved; I did water it well in between times. The gardener put fertiliser around the plant, but not till after it had been moved, and it wasn't raked in much, as you can see, it wouldn't be on the surface otherwise.

Fertiliser, when it was moved??? It could be the reason, Fran.
Neither roses, nor other plants should be fertilised for several weeks after replanted. Water is important for new roots but fertiliser and even compost can burn the roots.

oh, right! I've now cut back the dead stems, leaving the green, hope it'll recover

Irrigate it and take the powder off. Maybe you will help, but the rose looks burnt at stake :-)

thanks Kat. sigh, don't know how old it is, but trust me to kill it within a year!

It sometimes happens, that we kill those, whom we, in fact, like. :-)

if it hadn't been so crowded in taht corner, I'd have left it where it was, but wanted to give it more space. ah well.

Don't worry Fran. Chances are it will re grow next year. It's not all that easy to kill a rose. Take heart. :)

Cut it hard back in the late winter to just above any live buds, and you might have lovely flowers next summer. If it is dead, it will be easy enough to lift it as it's newly planted there...and then you can replace it.

thanks Karen. I cut it back to what was left of green stems, which was quite a way down. It was probably long overdue for a hard pruning anyway, if the other shrubs are anything to go by! fingers x'd it'll recover.
