We've had the kits Kathy quite good aren't they , Tony made some Blackberry wine last year as we had so many blackberries growing all around us ,that was good as well .. I can't see us making any from grapes for a very long time ! I know what you mean about the airing cupboard and that smell !!!

Lol yes that smell!!, our airing cupboards in our bedroom it was like sleeping in a brewery. Rob bought quite a few wine making books but hasn't had a go at the proper stuff yet, maybe next year when he retires and has more time.
Oooo I bet blackberries very nice we had loads on the allotment this year too :-)

This reminds me of a spinster aunt of mine. She used to make elderberry wine but because she made it from gathered berries, she swore it wasn't alcoholic. The best was when she'd had a glass or two herself her speech got posher and posher, it was like rocket fuel lol!!

I don't think I could have slept with it in the bedroom Kathy it was bad enough with the airing cupboard in the hall we eventually bought a belt thing which went round the containers to keep them at the right temperature they were then 'sleeping' in the spare room ...
Waddy surely it would be counted as one of your 5 a day , 5 glasses that is .. your aunt knew what was good for her ... Lol .. !!

Lol! Aunty would have approved of that, funnily enough she really believed it wasn't alcoholic, bless her :)

Regarding how many vines and grapes you need to make wine: the disease-resistant which I grow are heavy cropping; this has been a very good season, my main red vine, Kempsey Black, averaged 11pnd per vine,
with Regent, at 8.5pnds per vine. This very high yeald is due to the warm weather, and also the amount of rain we had mid-summer. The price we pay for this is lower sugar levels. We can compensate for this by adding extra sugar, however it will not be a "bad" wine, just lighter in style.
In a hot dry season, it can take 15-16pnds of grapes to produce 1 gallon of juice (6 bottles) This year, Kempsey Black produced 1 gallon of juice from 12.5 pnds of juice.
So, you can see that if you can grow 3 or 4 hybrid vines
in a sunny position, you could, in the average year, have enough grapes to produce around 12 bottles of wine
