It was minus 26 overnight.

It warmed up a little to about minus 5 degrees C. That usually means snow, and we got about 2 inches. It is needed for insulation for the plants and perennials. With minus 26 overnight it means that the ground is frozen solid, some winters to a depth for 4 ft. or more. Frozen drains and frozen water pipes...it can be a nightmare.
the spring melt has been quite an event in the recent past, washing out our driveway and filling the pond that I'd dug with silt!

never thought of plants needing snow as in insulator, but now you mention it, it's obvious.
i only have one thermometer, but there were ice spears in my ickle pond today about noon, so it must have been a cold night. nothing to compare with yours, though!
