OMG! It's been so HOT in San Diego! This is the day before the President's Day Holiday long weekend. There was lots of people. Tomorrow there will hundred of thousands of people at the beach. The temps at the beaches have been up to 88ºF (31ºC) and warmer inland where I live. This is summer in the middle of winter. LOL! Photo taken Feb. 13, 2015.

Klahanie:
That sounds good, rain. Send some of the rain here, we so desperately need it.
I can't believe I'm complaining about hot weather, already. It's way too early in the year.

Shame the warmth can't be spread around more evenly! We have just the last few days come out of a very cold couple of weeks with snow & ice & hail, while you are suffering a heat wave!

We have a record cold spell coming this week. It's suppose to be like nothing we ever experienced.

I've been hearing about the severe cold spell heading your way. I hear it's going to be the coldest weather in more than 20 years. I wish you good luck! Hopefully, it'll past by fast. Take care and stay safe.

Half Moon Bay was 75f - usually the coldest and foggiest city on Earth in June. Santa Cruz beach and boardwalk- like those in the UK- hit 80f, 27C. Good corn dog and popcorn weather. With a Slurpy.
And the soils here are still muddy from last weeks heavy rains. Again, all new to me in my lifetime. Still,no rains for at least 10 more days. 21c like a flatline here.
Our Northeast USA is almost frightening. I'm watching the army of snow plows, railroad cars of snow,Industrial snow melters on the Weather Channel. The photos of..just light grey and one blurry person bending into the blizzard to walk...It is apocalyptic looking.

Thanks Delonix1. This cold is suppose to last for the week, but it is a searing biting cold and this will be a very long week. A couple poor souls have already froze to death. Boston has 7 feet of snow.

Stan:
I noticed it's been so warm up there, also. At least it's been cooling down at night. Here we had some nights last week this past weekend when it was still 75 - 80 degrees at 11:30 p.m. This is very unusual even for San Diego.
This past Saturday some hikers were helicopter lifted out of Mission Trails with heat-exhaustion (which is about a 15 min drive north-west of where I live) It was in the low 90's (34ºC) there and where I live. This should not be happening until July. This is so crazy!

I'm so sorry hear you can't catch a break from the brutal cold! I know most of the people in the Northeast are sick of the cold. It's been on the news every day about the severe cold. It's so crazy!

This is really near surreal. First is..all my previous attempts in the 80's-2010 failed with Maridol. This year,success..well,alive and well. I haven't exactly picked ripe fruit. Not from 12" plants!
Petra? shoot, one of the three stems looks to have collapsed, another not looking so good,a third looking very good considering. And its the largest/tallest. The old saw "Go large with tropicals" is true. The bigger they get,the hardier they get. a 33f they can shrug off...if its once for two hours.
Brazilian fern tree ? wow in February has thrown out new leaves. Its just a seedling I started around June.

It's so good to hear your Maradol papayas are doing so well. I've never had luck with growing any tropical papayas in the Bay Area. Only Babaco and Mountain papayas have I seen do well there.
Crotons have always been a lost cause there. All the ones I've tried there usually would die before mid-December.
My largest croton has been flowering since mid-January and is also growing new leaves.
I have never seen a Brazilian fern tree flush growth in February...and I used to have one when I lived in Fremont. This is truly going to be an amazingly warm year for the SF Bay Area.
Yesterday, I posted a photo of my little African Tulip tree. It's been blooming continually for two years. I've have never seen that happen here in San Diego. Actually, I've never seen this happen in the tropics, either. Typically, in the tropics the trees go semi-dormant in spring. Although, I have seen an African Tulip tree bloom every month of the year here in San Diego (they're all on different bloom cycles).

What else?
See who else is growing Washingtonia robusta (Mexican Fan Palm).
See who else has plants in genus Washingtonia.
