Maybe that because of the slat 'mulch', which does set them off nicely.

I found a big snail resting at the bottom of the fern but luckily not much damage was made.
By the way your Corsican hellebore (top right corner in the photo) has grown a lot and getting too big. I know I should divide it but I've got hostas and ferns very close to it and it's going to be a hard task therefore I'm having cold feet. Maybe I should move the hostas and ferns instead of dividing the hellebore? Or just let them be? Decisions, decisions!!!

The Hostas seem to be growing well this year. We have recently cut our Hellebores down and split them up and they are growing new leaves again. Now's the time to split them if you are going to.
