Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) in large pot

They look great in that orange pot.

That's a really full Codiaeum variegatum 'Petra'. It's beautiful! I'm going to buy one this year.

Delonix1, ...who needs flowers when leaves are so colourful. That is one beautiful plant and shines in the sun. I would have whole hedge of these if I could grow them.

I have a couple in pots. I used to have some planted in the ground in front yard. The extreme drought really caused them to look horrible...so I pulled them out last summer.

Crotons are really tropical...they don't tolerate protracted cool weather or cold, even a little cold. Protected cool weather causes them to loose leaves. Cold weather close to freezing causes the leaves to fall off very quickly! Like overnight.

I have Croton sticks-lol. I'm die hard. Not until the warm comes and I still see no growth will I toss them out.
I got almost two years out of them.

Two years for Crotons in the SF Bay Area is pretty miraculous! I could never get them past the middle of December. I tried many times.

Even when I started growing them here in San Diego, I had bad luck. The biggest problem is I thought they were much more drought tolerant than what they really are...and I never used to water them in winter. The Santa Ana Wind conditions would come, and it would get extremely hot and dry and the plants would dry out and die! This plant needs tons of water during the hot, dry Santa Ana wind conditions.
