Fuchsia, Dark and Delicious

Hywel, some of the leaves on our fuchsias are discoloured with light brown patches. We have sprayed them but do you know the cause? Could it be the atmosphere in the green house before they were moved outside?

It's difficult to tell without seeing it. It might be the shock of coming from a warm greenhouse to the outside.

Sort of like my Sultan. Only healthy. I saw this pick Howell,and went out to the yard to find it among the foliage,dug it out. No rootball...just a long big tap root.

So I moved it where its going to get more sun..and I can see it.

Whats your secret Hywel.....your Fuchsias always look amazing,I'm extremely envious!How do you overwinter them,do you cut them back or what? Mine are not in flower yet,foliage looks healthy enough,but no flowers!!boo hoo! I bought two new ones Electric Lights, which looks like Fuchsia Genii, and Pink Spangles, and those are the only ones in flower.What do you feed them with, I use tomato food.Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gralew, I just put them in an old outside loo for the winter. I take the withering leaves off and then just keep the compost slightly damp - I don't water them but just make sure they don't dry out completely - just check them about once a month.
I cut them back in the spring when I repot them, but I don't cut them back too much, sometimes I just shorten any very long branches, and cut out dead branches.
I find most of them don't want to flower much before July/August. Some of mine haven't got any buds yet.
But they can go on until Christmas time when there's a mild winter.
I used to have Pink Spangles once. It's very pretty.
I feed them with tomato liquid, but I read somewhere that it's a good idea to feed Fuchsias with a diluted concentration, and do it rather oftener than it sais on the packet/bottle. So I do it once a week (although this year I haven't done it as often as I would like)
I also try to pinch them out about twice or three times, and although that gives you a more compact plant, it does tend to delay flowering.

Make sure the concentration is a bit weaker than directed, incase you give them an overdose ! :D
