Bought as a dry bulb last July, kept in our Conservatory. Think this is giganteum Alba. Must ask Wylie's opinion, and wether to dry it off over winter.

There are/were six flowers on the one stem, all equal sized, dropping pollen everywhere. The bulb is now the size of a Cantelope Melon.

Good heavens!! does it have any perfume btw?

Yes a sweet, subtle scent, and loads of pollen. Luckily the pollen is not yellow as some Lilies, so doesn't stain.

What you may have is a Crinum jagus var. vanillodorum. C. giganteum is an alternate name that is rarely used. I'm going on not only the flower, but the foliage as well. Crinums grow during the winter and die back after flowering and setting seed. If you ever get seed, it should be planted immediately.

Have looked at Pacific Bulb site, it seems you could be right. I might leave one flower to see if it wants to set seed. The scent this evening is quite delightful, read it is pollinated by Hawk Moths, might have to do the job myself.

You were lucky to get flowers so fast. These don't like being moved or separated, and can take a couple of years to start flowering again.
I have Crinum 'Ellen Bosanquet', and it has sent up a stalk and should flower soon. It is a reddish pink colour.

You need to ask Whylie I think Dd, but I did read that my variety has been growing outside in Cornwall (I think).

For the UK, all I can go on is what the RHS says. The more sun they have, the more compact they are. Mine are around 4' tall. A lot of moisture also helps.

Thanks.......they have certainly had the moisture..lol
