oh I bet that looks great with all the leaves on as it looks good without them ... will the figs that are on it now get through the winter Amy ?
Brown Turkey is the popular choice in the UK Siris

My friend Gerry, the man who shared his allotments with me, had two trees in his half allotment plot. They produce a great many brevas but I've yet to see ripe fruit!
Sadly he gave up this plot a year ago & now he is going to give up his main plot in September next year. Therefore I won't be getting to see the trees with ripe fruit! ;-((

I believe ours to be Brown Turkey, there are better varieties I do believe....not a fig in sight again, the squirrels help themselves, should never have planted it close to the fence.....open invitation lol
Sue they are hardy, but need their roots contained to do well......

Yes its outside grown Sue this grows on the wall leading to the garage . It is a Brown Turkey Gg the leaves are huge .
Its odd Angela we have Squirrels but haven't once seen them eating the Figs the wasps and Bees are the worst culprits and then blue bottles will lay their eggs in the holes made by them ,pick and throw them away as any like that are bound to have maggots inside the fig .
This fig is contained in a box of 4 2x2 ft square concrete paving slabs the base is made up of a good thick layer of broken bricks for drainage , all of the figs you see here will be picked off they are second growth ones which didn't have time to ripen this year I will leave the new embryo Figs which are near the end of the shoots they are about pea sized ,these will develop into fruit for picking next year ..

The Fig, wow, that's some size, and all that fruit, pity it's too late to ripen.

Sue they are enormous plants, we cut ours down, as Amy says the leaves are huge, we have not contained it, wanted for the jungle effect, rather than the figs, luckily!!

Thank you for all that info, Amy. I will look for embryo figs now. Even in the conservatory all the leaves have fallen.

I have a Chicago Fig... also called a Bensonhurst Purple Fig. It is supposed to be hardy in cold climates and ours is as cold as Chicago anyway. Has survived in a pot for two years and I was tempted to plant it this summer but chickened out. It's indoors now and seems happy. Don't see any embryos.

Have you had any figs from it Lori , I'm afraid I'm lazy with our fig it hardly has any attention in fact it seems to thrive on neglect ...
12 Dec, 2016
that's what I need, Amy! anything that thrives on neglect will love my care. No figs and so far no embryos either. I left it outdoors until a frost then brought it inside. It's sitting beside my computer desk and it looks dead except for a small shoot with two leaves just emerging from the soil. Do you think I should I cut back on the watering or just carry on?

Oh Gosh Lori , thats a hard one for me to answer as I've never grown a fig in a pot indoors mine is well established planted outside , I would generally not water any plant very much during the dormant winter months but obviously they would dry out much quicker with the warm temperature indoors .. My method would be to poke a cane deep into the pot if it comes out wet /damp it will be watered enough if the cane comes out dry water it , it will have the appearance of being dead at this time of the year ... sorry ,good luck with it ....

Oh wow, is this your Fig, more than one plant? And permanently outdoors? If so what variety, please.
Love Figs, bought one this year, had 5 fruits from it, is in a pot.
