Thank you Amy

17 Apr, 2017

Hope you had a lovely Easter with your family bathgate.
And hope everyone else did too ? ?

17 Apr, 2017

Thank You! I hope you did as well. :)

17 Apr, 2017

Yes I had a lovely Easter thanks Bathgate, ( apart from the fact that I was the one doing all the cooking for family ect...as per usual! ) lol.
Managed to get some gardening done too. ?

19 Apr, 2017

humm You must be a good cook. I'm glad you enjoyed the day. I had the usual family reunion at my sister's. She lives in Wantagh, New York, which is South Shore, Long Island, New York. We all took a bike ride out to the ocean - perfect day.

19 Apr, 2017

Belated Easter Greetings! Hope you had a really enjoyable Easter Holiday!

19 Apr, 2017

Thank you. I hope you did as well Tracey.

19 Apr, 2017

Sounds like you definetly did have a perfect day there what with riding out to the ocean on your bikes, really lovely! We go out riding on our bikes too, but unfortunately
not to any oceans, just to local country side ( which is lovely too but in a different way) lol
And even if I do say so myself I'm not a bad cook at all, trouble is I really really hate cooking, but I also like good home cooked food too, so I kinda have to do it! ( except when we eat out of course).
We are off on holiday to Australia in may so I'm looking forward to a nice break from all this cooking lark then. Lol.

19 Apr, 2017

Enjoy your Holiday in Australia and your break from cooking - prepare for a very long plane ride. I was down to New Zealand a few years ago - stayed in Auckland. Wonderful time - did some scuba diving!

20 Apr, 2017

Thanks Bathgate. Must admit I'm not good at flying and I'm actually going to go to the doctors and ask for something to calm my nerves. 13 odd hours to kuala lumpa, then 8 odd hours to Sydney fills me with dread!!!!? Sure I will be fine though. Lol

Am I right in thinking new Zealand is even further!?
And I would love to scuba dive but don't think I would ever be brave enough!! Bet it was great!

20 Apr, 2017

You're right, New Zealand is a little further out and south of Australia. I felt like I was in the UK. I actually lived in Kuala Lumpa for a month. I don't think you can really 'prepare" for the long plane ride. Just bring a lot of reading material and one of those huge Crossword Puzzle books. I remember flying over the Swiss Alps - that was amazing!

20 Apr, 2017

I bet new Zealand was better than the uk! Lol
Unfortunately the only part of kuala lumpa we will get to see will be the airport! Must have been great staying there for a month though.
I'm far too scared to look out the window on planes! I must miss out on lots of views!
Books, puzzles and eye masks to the ready! Lol ??✈️

20 Apr, 2017

Happy Belated Easter to you! :>))

23 Apr, 2017

Thank You! Hope you had a good time as well. Now, I'm just working on the vegetable garden - waiting on my carrots & beets.

23 Apr, 2017

I had a terrific Easter!

I know the feeling about working on the vegetable garden. I want to put one in this year...it should have been planted two months ago. I do have an eggplant that was planted two seasons (summer 2015) ago. It's full of flowers now.

23 Apr, 2017

I've never tried growing eggplant. I should give it a go. I love eggplant parmesan. Did you ever try making that? It's wonderful with meltly cheese & tomato sauce, yum!

Mag - let us know how your trip is going - at least if you survived the plane ride. Would love to hear from you!

24 Apr, 2017

Hi Bathgate. I don't fly till the 10th may.....I'm am so not looking forward to the flights though...... I will definetly let you know how it went and maybe even try to do a blog
too. And I just had to google egg plant, I had never ever heard of it before??? I was thinking "what on earth is that"...... but just seen it a perfectly good aubergine plant! lol ?

24 Apr, 2017

Bathgate:

Yes, I've made Eggplant Parmesan. I used to grow 5 different varieties of eggplant at one time. Eggplants grow very well here in San Diego. They live for 3 or 4 years. They're a tropical sub-shrub in nature. It loves a lot of heat, sun and water to produced the most fruit.

24 Apr, 2017

Delinix1
I like aubergines so I would like growing these said eggplants too......shame they won't grow in England well enough without a greenhouse as I unfortunately haven't got one of those! Good luck with your plant though! ??

24 Apr, 2017

LOL - another reason to move to San Diego - eggplant parmesan! We'll have to get around the semantics but I'm glad we are all talking about the same thing.

Here in New York, I only get one season out of them as with all my vegetables, except if I had a green house. I had a garage which I used, but then I had a tornado. Now I don't have a garage. I think it's in New Jersey, lol!

I must start the seeds indoors in February, then gingerly plant them outside after all threat of frost usually May 1.

Just when the plants are mature enough and at their best, boom, it's all over with a killing frost. I need to start new plants every year.

Mag- Thanks for keeping in touch. Yes stop in if you can. Flying from New York to Auckland took me 3 days. I've crossed nearly every time zone on the planet. I know how Dorothy felt when she landed in Oz, lol! But the people their, are so warm & friendly, it didn't really matter.

24 Apr, 2017

No problem at all! ?
So your garage got taken by a tornado ah........oh my goodness that must have been a bad one! Did your car survive undamaged? (Well also did you and your family too of course? ) Lol

24 Apr, 2017

Yes, the car is fine. I had it parked outside, Everybody is OK. A huge tree in front on my house fell on somebody's car, but that is city owned property. I lost some garden furniture, part of my garden fence. However, I found a screen door in my garden and an awning - win some, lose some, lol. They just drop out of the sky, then you are in it - no time to even think about it.

24 Apr, 2017

A screen door and some awning ah...... oh yes they will always come in handy! Hehe.
You know what though, I seriously am glad we don't get any bad tornados over here, I wouldn't like them at all.... I'm too much of a scaredy cat! ?

25 Apr, 2017

They are very scary, even though I'm laughing now. I never want to see one again.

25 Apr, 2017

I can imagine!!!! And glad that's all I can do. Lol

25 Apr, 2017

Maggiewilsor:

Aubergine (eggplant) is very easy to grow here. My plants produce too many fruit. I need to give them away.

26 Apr, 2017

Bathgate:

Luckily I never get frost here. I have a 365 day a year growing season. However, with this being said: Some vegetables will not produce in winter because they need the longer days of late spring through early fall. I do know sunflowers will grow in winter, though. Tomatoes are grown commercially here in winter along with many other vegetables.

I hope you're kidding about your garage! That's horrible if your garage was taken down by a tornado. Yikes!

26 Apr, 2017

I wish I can say I was kidding, but when the sky turns a strange green color, that's not a good thing. Most of my favorite veggies only grow in the cool spring days. Cabbages, beets, spinach, carrots are much nicer in spring or fall. I really love parsnips. They need a couple frosts to really sweeten up nicely. Even tomatoes will stall above 90F.

26 Apr, 2017

Delonix
Always better to have too many rather that not enough though. Your doing something very right that makes them produce lots? ? ??

26 Apr, 2017

Bathgate:

Those vegetables you mentioned grow best in winter, along with broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts. I once had a basil plant which grow to 6' tall and lived for 3 years.

26 Apr, 2017

Maggiewilsor:

The subtropical climate here in San Diego is perfect for many fruits and vegetables. Stone fruits don't grow well. It's too hot here in winter. We grow mangoes, bananas, cherimoyas, sapote, all citrus, guavas, avocados everywhere, though.

26 Apr, 2017

Your making me jealous now. Lol. ?

26 Apr, 2017

Maggiewilson:

We do have a very envious climate. San Diego rates top number one or two best climates in the U.S. Where I live in the east city is much hotter (as much as 20ºF hotter in summer) than where the official temp is taken at the Airport (Lindbergh Field) in downtown.

27 Apr, 2017

Sounds very nice weather indeed delonix! ?
It's got really chilly here where I am, verging on a bit cold!! Brrr!

27 Apr, 2017

Yes, most of the year the weather is warm, sunny and dry (mostly too dry and sunny). We just broke a 6 year drought this year. I am so happy to be able to water the plants and trees again! It's been very comfortable here the last several weeks...mostly 75 - 88ºF (24 - 31ºC) during the day. Today it was 85ºF (29ºC) here where I live.

30 Apr, 2017

That must have been hard not to be able to water the plants and trees and for 6 years too!!! Goodness how on earth did you manage that!! Didn't they die? Bet the hose pipe will be busy from now on though! Lol

30 Apr, 2017

We were able to water plants. The last couple of summers we had really strict water restrictions. It's only been a month since the governor of California declared our drought officially over.

I did have a lot of plants that succumbed to the horrible, historic drought! Hopefully, some of the hundreds of millions of dying trees in California are going to recover!

We still have to conserve water here. Water is a very valuable commodity here in San Diego and throughout California.

2 May, 2017

You can sometimes take water for granted can't you. We are so lucky to have it really and don't always realise this. Bet the plants are loving it! Lol

4 May, 2017

That's so true Mag. One thing New York has going for it, is really good water. The water system here is an engineering marvel that is so easily taken for granted. There are a series of aqueducts which channel our water for hundreds from the Catskill Mountains It's powered by gravity and modelled after the Roman Aqueducts. It's really amazing.

4 May, 2017

Yes, in some places people do take water for granted. It's becoming less now with this last horrible drought which affected all of California.

Bathgate:

That's amazing to have such a work of engineering for a water works, there. It's really nice to drink water from the sink! When I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area I had water from Hetch Hetchy, it was water from the Sierra Mountain's snow pack. Excellent water quality!

5 May, 2017

I hope to visit New York for my 50th birthday in 2019, it's one of the places I would like to see, water system and all. Lol

5 May, 2017

Just googled Hetch Hetchy as I had not heard of it before. I can well imagine the water would be excellent!

5 May, 2017

Maggiewilsor:

Yes, Hetch Hetchy has some of the best water in the U.S.

Here in San Diego we receive much of our water from the Colorado River. It's hard-water, Yuck! It's not good for the plants, either. Some plants really hate the hard-water! My 8' tall coffee tree which died (I chopped it down last summer) in the drought, despised the water here. It did produce a lot of coffee, though.

5 May, 2017

Wow wow and wow again........ you had a coffee tree..... how good must that of been.... was the coffee good ..... I bet it was!!!! I think that amazing you grew that!!!!
Getting back to the water, I guess we may have hard water here in Essex too ( only guessing though), I do tend to buy my water though or boil it then drink it after it's cooled down, not sure if that helps too much though. Lol

5 May, 2017

Yes, the water here is extremely hard! I bet your water is much better than here. :>))

Yes, here's some pics of my coffee tree. You will see the brown-tipping on the leaves from the hard water here.

I wouldn't like to bet on it delonix lol.
Thanks for the pics. I shall Have a little look at them ?

5 May, 2017

LOL! Enjoy the pics and if you make comments on them I'll respond to them. :>))

8 May, 2017

hi delonix. I did try to copy and paste to view those photos of the coffee tree but it didn't work. Every time I tryed it said no content found. Don't know if I'm doing something wrong? Lol

8 May, 2017

I just copied and pasted into the address bar on a new page, it worked for me. Are you pasting onto a new page into the address bar?

It's too bad GoY doesn't have live links!

8 May, 2017

Delonix.
I finally managed to look, ( but not at the first one as it just wouldn't work at all) don't know what I'm doing or not doing but it just wouldn't have it!
All the others...... well what can I say! BRILLIANT! Such an amazing tree and such pretty flowers! I saw the brown edges on the leafs, and that's caused by hard water. You wouldn't think it would you.

8 May, 2017

Glad you got to see the pics! :>)

Yes, brown-tipping is common with hard-water sensitive plants here. Sometimes my papaya plants have the same problem (not as badly, though).
