I just love Lythrum... it's so pretty and settles in so well. I find it a source of hilarity that this lovely plant was the subject of a ban here in NA. It has naturalized so well that it now grows in our wetlands and swamps and some person who wanted/needed a grant to continue studies decided to vilify it. They said it was taking over our wetlands and crowding out native species! What stupidity. He finally had to admit that his theories were groundless. Meanwhile zealots were going crazy with herbicides! Disgusting! They are now doing the same to the giant hogweed that's spreading across the province. Give it a few years and it will find it's niche too. Only problem with the hogweed is that if it's sap gets on your skin it will cause blisters! makes your skin photosensitive... Amazing plant, it has found a way to strike back at those who would shred it or pull it out by the roots! Isn't nature grand?
