Monstera deliciosa - Split-leaf-Philodendron Flower and Fruit

Yes, Monstera deliciosa becomes a gigantic vine here. I know it's widely used a house plant in many countries.

Here it can climb to more than 30' or 10 m tall or become a huge ground cover.

I'm guessing the fruit will ripen very soon. I, many times don't get to the fruit before the ants. That sweet pineapple flavor really attracts all the ants. It smell just like a sweet pineapple, also.

Thats a great height Andy yes make sure its ripe as its poisonous if it is nt properly ripe. You ll have to get a burgular ant alarm lol. great it tastes like pineapple.

Looking good Andy. I have to check mine. I saw fruit on it in spring. One or two. I was glad to see it finally start to climb the Podocarpus. When it touched my back fence- it grew very fast to the top. The Podocarpus isnt as good. Its reluctant to attach.

Wow... that's so pretty! nice that it's delicious as well. Interesting how many plants protect themselves with poisonous effects... in this case it ensures that the fruit ripens before it will be attractive to us or the ants!

Generally, you can tell it's ripe by the smell. It smells very sweet when ripe.

They grow very well up there. This plant originally came from a friend in Hayward. He said it was an excellent variety. Unfortunately, I don't know the named variety and my friend passed away many years ago.

Yes, many fruits need to be ripe to be eaten. Many can cause lots of problems if eaten raw.

I know in Mexico they pick this fruit pretty immature and sell it. I'm guessing they ripen off the plant. I haven't tried it, though.

One trick Andy- is too put it in a bag with an Apple. The ethylene ect. I know you know how it all works.

That's an enormous fruit! The flower looks good as well.

The fruit is about 18 inches (46 cm) long.

They had a mahoosive one at Oxfords Botanic Gardens but visitors kept smacking their heads on the woody trunk that was sagging down over the passageway.

It does grow very large and take up a lot of space. I just cut a huge 8 or 9' (3 m) section out and sold it a few weeks ago. It has so many aerial roots, also.

There's some at the San Diego Zoo which cover a few acres as ground cover. It's a pretty awesome sight!
