Thank you, Cornus midwinter fire sits in the middle, one of my favourites, it gives colour from its stems all winter.

What a stunning photograph.......just where is your Cornus? please don't say it is that large yellow shrub!! because if ours grows that large we shall be in trouble, btw I think I may have found the Aster!!

Yes Dr you guessed right. It stayed small for the first five years but now it's about six feet tall.

DD, they need to be quite tall so as the bark shows up in winter after leaf fall. They are cut down again each year once things start to sprout.
Mid border is about the right place for them.

GF my C midwinter fire was a standard when I bought it, I've never pruned it, I guess at some point I could cut back the top growth?

Dawn, I always cut mine down at the start of spring, they sprout quickly & you get more stems to colour up come wintertime, keeps the size in check too.
