More winter Aconites

Lovely aren't they,Janey? and I also had some from Amy,which have just opened this week..not as many flowers as yours yet,but I think they will spread nicely :o)

Amy's aconites are all over the country :-)

Ha ha...we all have some and we're all hoping she is ok and settling in....and a whole new garden to care for..:))

Yes!! She briefly emailed me on Sunday, they have moved, she's doing a blog when a bit more settled but she said the bad luck had followed them ,:-(.

Those Aconites are simply lovely! What joy their bright colours bring to the dull days of January & February! I don't know why but these are one of the few spring flowering bulbs I've never had! I'll have to remedy that next year!

I'm sorry for Amy to hear that her bad luck has followed her to her new house! ? Hope she is able to get over it soon & once she has got the new house more or less put together perhaps she can make a start on her new garden.

Balcony, it's a good time to move really as she will see what she has inherited in the new garden from the start of the year.

I think I may move my Aconites Balc, as they're in a shady spot so never actually open! I love the little frilly collar they have like a ruff...

It is Dawn, just a bit chilly house wise, can't really have all doors and windows open....but cosy evenings to plan for the garden...

Janey, I was thinking of moving my aconites that are in the shade too as the other ones in full sun (not as we get much in January) have done so much better.

Oh I will then, nearer the house, so I can see them from the kitchen..:))

Be a chance to split them and get more clumps planted up.

I'm just reading my glorious book, Beth Chatto's Woodland Garden, in which she talks about winter aconites and says they are quite invasive in her light sandy soil so might be worth adding sand to the soil when we move them, seems they thrive on free draining soil which I haven't got.

Thanks for this tip Dawn..mine might benefit from adding some too..they aren't spreading much either,but do get plenty of sun..and I agree with you ,Janey..remembering where they are in summer ..ooops ! might have dug some up :o)

That's interesting to know, I'll move mine to the sunny side of the garden...im just wondering how they'll fare during the summer as it'll be hot and dry.

Hi Janey, the book doesn't say but Beth has them in her wood garden and the RHS say they need Well-drained, Moist but well-drained soil, yes, that old chestnut :-)

Yes a little contradictory Dawn...thank you though, they wouldn't be happy on my sunny side....so woodland side it is..and shady....in fact I'll leave them where they are, as that IS where they're happy...lol!

Looks like I should move mine out of a sunny spot too..but sadly,I can't see my one and only shady border,except from a bedroom..and I ain't gonna keep going in there to look at them ! Lol..I guess they are going to take their chances where they are..all three of them in flower,,so far :o)

The aconites seem a bit fussy don’t they.
I’m always moving plants around and it’s amazing how they do so much better in a spot they like.
