Really lovely orchid flowers Paul.

Bathgate:

Your orchid looks excellent. I can grow pretty much anything. I've always had problems growing orchids well. Many people here grow Cattleyas, Phaelanopsis, Masdevalia, Dendrobiums, Epidendrum hybrids outdoors here under trees or shade structures so well. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. :>/

Some are more of a challenge than others and quite an investment. I"d love to have a Vanda but it"s like adopting a child.

So many people here say they are so easy to grow. Vanda, Oncidium hybrids grow very well outdoors here...not for me, though. :>((

I used to have Oncidium 'Sharry Baby' it did very well outdoors and then it shriveled up. It smells like chocolate or chocolate milk. I loved it! It's a cheap orchid here. I must buy another one. :>))

It's hard to find a good outlet. I'd love to have one as well, but need to read up on proper care

Yes, for sure. I was watching Youtube videos on orchids last night. I think I'm going to try some Vanda hybrids. I love that they can be grown out of any soil medium. You just have to soak them in water once a day or every few days for 10 minutes. I'm sure it would do well under my shade structure. I've seen so many thousands of orchids in The Botanical Building in Balboa Park, which is just a large lath house.

Vanda's are one of my faves. I've seen many on display at the orchid show at NYBG. Keep me posted if you find one.

Vanda are very widely sold everywhere here. You can find them at all the big box stores and nurseries. I think I want an orange-flowering variety. The orange flowers are gorgeous!

I took my Phaelanopsis and cut almost all the roots off and put it into water a few nights ago. It looks so much better, already. When it generates new roots I'll replant it into bark.

Thanks Julia - it's one of my faves. Glad you like it. How are you by the way? Haven't seen you on here too much.

I'm OK thanks for asking, but still in the middle of my husband's cancer treatment so my time is rather spoken for at the moment.

He's very positive most of the time, so hopefully all will be well. Fingers crossed.
