Distinct perennial from Mexico, growing to eight feet or more in a season. The strange purple leaf stipules are attractive, then yellow pea-type flowers appear in autumn. Sheltered position in full sun and well-drained soil - too much moisture in the winter is more of a problem than cold

Andrew have you tried digging a piece off the root and growing it on , I did ,you may know or not we moved house in January I hated leaving my Amicia behind so took a chance on taking a piece off the root with me , it's grown brilliantly well and has flowers its about 2ft tall , I'll leave it in its pot this winter and then plant it out next spring ..
