Lori,

That's a lot of snow. It looks really COLD! You can come here to San Diego, it's nice and warm 82ºF (28ºC) right now at 2:00 p.m.

Will you be getting the wildlife coming in closer Lori?

Almost a month early, Hywel... usually get our first real snowfall about Nov. 17.
It seems that way, Karen. the trees are bare again and all is gray and brown... our frost free period is very short compared to the UK.
That's very tempting, Andy. lucky you.
Yes, it's the same every year about this time, Janey. The deer seem to know that they're safe on our land. We had two does about 20 ft. from our back deck yesterday...they come to eat the kale and sleep in the long grass fringe along the back of our property. Hunting season soon and I just can't abide it.

I can imagine, are the hunters able to come onto your land or would they need permits?

30 Oct, 2018

If I post signs they cannot hunt on our land...they have to have permits to hunt in any case. Some people here own hundreds of acres and hunt on their own property, but if they post that it cannot be hunted then they cannot hunt either.
nature's way is not easy to accept because herds need the culling done by predation and it's sad to see predators at work. In years past, hunting of does was prohibited without a specific license issued each year if the herd was judged to be thriving.. the deer became so numerous that they were a danger on the highways. It takes a debacle like that for well intentioned conservationists to see that the best way is natures way. It's like the "Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly"... it's not correctible once it reaches a certain point the food chain breaks and it's just chaos.
I planted kale and chard for the deer this year, it's better than feeding them molasses laced corn and wheat.

NO,IT CAN'T BE!..
You need to move to Ontario. Ontario,California!..in the hot San Bernardino Valley I think it is.

Hi Stan! No, no, no... I'm not too good with fires or landslides ... to me, snow and cold for a few months feels like a small price to pay. Actually, I think I'm a cold person and I might melt. ;-)
Having said that: I would love to visit California, though. I'm fascinated by desert flora and fauna and I'd love to stand beneath a tree that was living when Shakespeare was writing. I really would love to see the redwoods.
so Where's that El Nino winter? We could stand a mild one after the last two bone crackers.

80f today here. Far above average. But,this might be the last of that kind of warm and back to the 70f or 22C kind of warm.
If those hunters ever lived where wildlife is hard to find? They would not be so fast to "harvest" skinny wild animals and maybe..just leave them be.
Close to my home we have corridors to the open lands..and to drive by and see Deer,Turkeys and Geese..makes me want to take a picture, not a pull out a gun-ha.
Let It Be, as Paul once said.

So much has changed since my youth, Stan. There was a time when wild game kept families eating through the long winter. Not so anymore except in areas of extreme isolation, and there aren't many of those left. In my youth game was scarce and many hunters went into the hinterland to hunt moose.
Some of my neighbours have told me that they saw a young moose near the conservation area forest, near our property... I hope he's long gone by now because we hear the guns sometimes in the early morning and late afternoon. It spoils an otherwise lovely season. Some people are ignorant of hunting safety and etiquette...and will shoot across roadways and near houses! Hunting season can be hazardous for more than just the poor deer.
I agree with you (and Paul)!
