That’s a lovely one! Strawberry red!

I collected some seed from some poppies a couple of years ago as I was walking along near the fields and I seem to be getting different sorts coming up Karen.

I'm a poppy fan... love the little flanders poppies too. This one looks like one of the snazzy annuals. The seeds my annual poppies come from has been collected from a stock that goes back 5 decades. My Dad's faves. every year he collected the seed would allow me to shake the little "containers" over the soil...anywhere I pleased. I've seen them growing in pure sand. Totally under rated plant in my opinion.

That's lovely Lori...The seed heads are nice too.

I love these multi coloured hordes that pop up every year in my garden, but mine seem to have suffered very badly from a fungus, much worse than previous years. The bottom leaves start to go black and wither away and it spreads to the top very quicly.
This year I have been very strict and removed all but the colours and shapes I particularly love, but removing all the affected leaves in the hope to stop fungus spores accumulating in the soil. I wonder if it'll do any good but it'll also be interesting to see if the paler shades I left will dominate next year instead of the bright red ones.

it's good you're paying attention and trying to do something about the situation. Others would have yanked it, and replanted something else. I've noticed the die back of the lower leaves on the annual poppies but put it down to water damage .. I've had fungal spores from the soil kill off the lower leaves of my hollyhocks and stopped that situation by underplanting a dense ground cover. it's a symbiosis that seems to work with the tall tap rooted plants and the shallow rooted ground cover. it blocks the splash back from the rain and keeps the spores off the lower leaves.

Perhaps a light cover of compost on the soil might help. Don' t know but worth a try.

Yes I've been thinking along similar lines but my approach has been underplanting like you suggested Lori and instead of compost for ground cover lindak, I've been using my grass clippings. Initially I used the grass mulch as an experiment around my roses which always had blackspot, another fungus! (I don't do chemicals) That really worked, I've hardly had to pick of any affected leaves, just hoping it'll last! But I was a bit too late for the poppies, next summer I'll be hoarding my own and the neighbour's clippings 😅

Good luck...hope it works.

yes! keep us posted on your progress. I dislike grass so much that I don't use it. happy to report that this year the creeping Jenny seems to be doing a fine job with the hollys in the transfer bed...but the hollyhocks which self seeded on my driveway (of all places) have a bit of rust from splash back.

I always place some fresh compost around the bottom of my roses and clematis every year to stop fungal spores like black spot splashing up on to the new growth.

I found an article about the benefits of mulching with grass clippings, which quite impressed me and as I always have enough around decided to have a go. I am not a fan of grass either Lori but since I got my little terrier I redesigned my garden as she loves playing around, but the older she gets the more areas become planted up. I'll end up with just grass paths again..

I've acquired a little terrier too!... His name's Ryot. He's a Yorkie but he came from a breeder in France via a Bouvier breeder here in Canada... He was supposed to be a stud but he is sterile... best thing that ever happened to him and to us. we love him dearly and he can just be his little self...nothing to prove or pedigree to accumulate. what's your girls name?

Hi Lori and Resinone, sounds like you both have a dear little companion there. I always say hello to the dogs that pass by here. It was a small terrier at the fete we went to last Saturday that won the contest for the dog with the waggiest tail.

Sorry to have run away with your thread lindak! I'll post a pic of my terrier lori. How did we get from poppies to terriers??

8 Jul, 2019

Yes... sorry about that, Linda! One year I had the fringy petals and the next it was back to mostly solid petals.. interesting dna in those plants. every other characteristic is exactly the same except for the petals! I found a great combo last year... I have white asiatic lilies that bloom at roughly the same time... the two together is very charming. I think I can find a pic from last year...everything is behind times now. will post the old pic anyway. :-)
