Victoria Park, close to Columbia Road and Hackney City Farm, is Britain's oldest purpose-built municipal park, created 1845-1850. \it resulted from a report in 1839 by the local Registrar of Births, Marriages and deaths, who commented on the high mortality rate in the East end due to the overcrowded, insanitary, and polluted living conditions. A petition by 30,000 people to Queen Victoria led to the park's creation.
