Cornus mas

Interesting! I had a look at mine today and can't see any buds at all. Very disappointing. I might take them out actually, they have not been a success and I could replace them with something that will thrive, perhaps more Crab apples. They are the golden ones, and I suspect that that is the problem. The green one I had in my last garden was a huge success.

Decision made. Thanks Dawn. I've just ordered two Sorbus 'Joseph Rock' to replace them. They have been in for 6 years and are still only about 3' high. I think I've made the right decision.

I have a large empty pot, so I might root prune them and see how they do in there. If they come out with good roots on.

Karen, I’ve just looked back and I planted mine 5 years ago and it’s taken until now to be covered in buds. I think the mild winter has helped. They’re not the prettiest of shrubs. I think you’ve made a good decision,

They are out. I replanted one elsewhere, but it will probably die. Cornus are tough to move. They both had some buds. Well behind yours, but that’s fair enough. But they were an ugly shape and I’d never liked them.

Sometimes plants are a disappointment so why put up with them.

Yeah...I was hoping for similar to the one I had in my last garden. I loved it. But these were never going to be like that. They were much shrubbier.

Oh yes, lovely that one, can you remember the variety of the one in your old garden? Or had it just been pruned well initially?

Dawn...could this be the Edgworthia? The bark looks to brown for Cornus.

I don't know hahaha I thought it was Cornus Mas, this was from the GC, maybe Edgworthia. Probably wrong label, I will watch the flowers closely.

It's probably just because it's older Dawn. The bark looks a lot browner and shinier, but it's probably just because its a more mature plant. :) Sorry if I've planted a seed of doubt in your mind. It certainly looks like Cornus flower buds. I've never grown edgworthia. Every year I look at them and they are beautiful.

Well I bought an Edgworthia but I think Iost it, then there's chimonanthus somewhere or gone, I was set on lots of winter flowerers but its taken ages for them to flower.

I have been thinking along those lines too. Some of these winter shrubs take ages to establish don’t they. And Witch Hazel...so slow!

I’m pleased it’s not just me Karen, they are soooo slow, seems they have to be quite mature before they flower.

Depends on the variety. Mine have both flowered from when I bought them. Jelena and Arnold Promise.

Oh! Sorry! Yes! It takes ages to get good winter colour...waiting for conifers and cornus to grow. And I’ve lost the first two Winter sweet I tried. But the third one seems ok....but tiny. And Daphne takes for ever to grow.

I look fwd to seeing your Winter Sweet. These winter ones are so slow, Im sure my Cryptomeria japonica 'Spiralis' hasnt moved in two years, Daphne just die on me, I've probably been too mean and bought too small but I'm fancying Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill'.

Love it Dawn I was looking at mine the other day there's nothing to show yet but it was new last year so I'm hoping its just a little behind ...

Jaqueline Postil would be my choice too Dawn. But to get one a decent size.....pricey, and not easy to find either.

Karen, do you think really established Daphne are the way to go.
