I moved the fuchsia to a shaded place, where it will receive rainwater, as the leaves were falling due to the wind and direct sunlight. Several of these black balls appeared at different points on the plant. I ended up discovering that they are berries with seeds.

Wow, no kidding! I didn't know they were edible.

I've also read they are edible & you can even make jam with them! I've never tried them for myself & I generally deadhead the plants on the balcony so very few get to grow into berries.

an elderly aunt used to make jam from them. quite sweet but not that a distinctive flavour if I remember. plenty of vit c by all accounts.

Learning Learning... eating was a surprise, now making jam... wow.
About deadheading the plants I have a question, should I prune the fucsias?

Only prune your Fuchsias at the start of spring, cut out any dead branches, (if they have no leaves you can scrape away a tiny bit of bark on a dead looking stem & if it is green underneath then your Fuchsia is still alive but if it is brown that branch will be dead), if you then cut the remaining branches back by about half you will get a tidier plant & stimulate more branches to grow which will give you more flowers (& berries!)

Again, thank you, thank you David. I'll follow your suggestions. I've looked after how to prune plants on google, but they weren't as detailed as your suggestions.

I've never tasted them! I don't normally leave them to develop as I usually pick them off as soon as the flowers fall off!
