I love light houses so much history to them and if they could talk I wonder what they could tell of past events happening there. Lobely photo.

That's true. Each lighthouse has it's own unique flash code and paint design/colors. This helps ships navigate - could help anybody really.
your pinterest sounds fascinating Kate. Can you send me the link. Of course I'd love to see your lighthouses. I can probably send you a few more photos

It's definitely an interesting thing to join for free. You can get lots of ideas from the universal site. No problem I’ll let you know.

When we lived on the Isle of Wight there were two Lighthouses, One called St. Catherine's, think it was near Ventnor, and one at the Needles. We could hear the foghorn from where we lived at Lake. Do you know how old this lighthouse is Paul?

Thanks Kate. I've never actually been to 'Pinterest'. Here is my opportunity to get familiar with it. Seems a little overwhelming - information overload, lol. I'm sure I'll get the gist of it. I'll look for you.
Hi Linda, This Lighthouse was built in 1858. The Lens was made in France. This lighthouse replaced another one which was built in 1825. The first lighthouse was inadequate - not tall enough and the ground wasn't stable. This is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the US. QE2, Lusitania, Carpathia all came through here. The Titanic would have come through here as well.

Thanks for all the info Paul, sounds really interesting. I'd love to take a step back in time and see all the old ships passing by.

Aren't they amazing - and the people who live on them. I still get pensive whenever I have to cross the Atlantic either by ship or plane.

When we lived on the I.O.Wight we sometimes had to use the ferries to Portsmouth or Southampton, and those journeys could get pretty rough according to the weather. We visited the Victory 3 times and the Mary Rose twice, Although they have altered the layout in the place where they keep her now. The Victory they have done restoration work on, but a fantastic boat.

That ferry sounds fantastic Linda - so refreshing especially on a hot summer day with the cool breeze. Those old ships are so interesting and hold so much history. The Constituion (old ironsides) is still docked in Boston Harbor. What a site to see it with all of its sails billowing. I've always been drawn to the water. I forgot to mention, this lighthouse is open to the public. What looks like a doughnut right below the lamp, is actually a terrace where you can come outside and enjoy 360° unobstructed views of the sea and landscapes, then you can go up inside the lamp with a tour guide. However, you'll have to climb the the thin wiry spiral staircase. The deer seem to favor this location, not sure why. They are everywhere. The buildings down below are the dwelling for the keeper, a museum, souvenir shop & café. Then there's the beach.

That sounds amazing Linda. Something so calming about being on the open seas. I'm always drawn to the water, love the beach and anything nautical. The ferry ride is so refreshing esp it its a hot sunny day. I forgot to mention that this lighthouse is open to the public. You are welcome to climb up to the top. If you can see what looks like a doughnut around the top, it's actually a terrace where you can come outside and enjoy 360° views of the Atlantic & landscapes. You can go up inside the lamp with a tour guide who will tell you all about it. The buildings down below are the dwelling for the keeper, museum, souvenir & café.

The views from up there must be amazing Paul. We loved living near to the sea and loved it's different moods. I used to go horse-riding along the sand.

Great Pic Paul - knowing how much you enjoy Fire Island!
I’ve a Pinterest board just for lighthouses. This is one I’ll have to add.
