We see quite a lot of sky from up here on the hill HB. We had had some very colourful skies this year. My grandad used to say red sky in the morning...shepherds warning....bad weather on its way.
Red sky at night...shepherds delight..a good day ahead.

I love astronomy, but could never distinguish between the stars & planets. I'd love to see Saturn & Jupiter if I only knew where to look and when. I do see the occasional asteroid that flairs up green. So much yet to be discovered.

Mars has a distinctive orange colour Paul, there are sites that can point you in the right direction of sky to look at.
We use http://stellarium.org/en_GB/ it shows the night sky around your area. Hope this helps.
