Matrix planting?

This is how I would like my garden to grow! I planted a few cyclamen hederifolium 5 years ago. The lychnis coronaria have self-seeded from 2 plants nearby. The geranium 'White-ness' runs about in the spring and the lamium does likewise. A tricky area under a large birch so I am more than happy with the unplanned result. I merely act as a referee. In the Autumn self-sown schizostylis appear right up against the trunk. Lovely.

What I would love, Meadow, is complete ground cover in the borders and if the plants do it themselves by self-seeding, that's fine by me. Matrix planting is more deliberate and usually has lots of grasses planted too. I'm not a purist, just prefer the more 'natural' look. I'm happy to act as referee if some get out of control. I think the lychnis here may be on the way to being that!

I did a similar thing last year Ange, with sweet woodruff but it has got out of control! Great groundcover though 🙂.

We have a bit of woodruff in our 'wildy corner', Sheila. There is a path worn through it where the hedgehog creeps under the fence into our garden from next door. It does spread, I agree, but I enjoy the starry little flowers.

Yes, it’s a pretty one - and easy enough to pull out - I did plant it for ground cover after all 🙂.
