Hornet Hoverfly?

I'm still going for a Hoverfly.

Julia, when I looked at images for Hoverflies earlier, I found that there is a larger type called 'Hornet Hoverfly' which has really confused me! It was quite a size . . .

it has the patterns of a hornet hoverfly Volucella zonaria, and going by its size on the pyracantha leaf I 'd say yes it was.

it is one of the largest UK hoverflies, it mimics a hornet so it is less likely to be predator on.

Thanks Sbg, I was fascinated by it and followed it around the garden for a few minutes. It finally settled on the Pyracantha long enough for me to photograph it.

We learn something new everyday. :-)

Certainly do . . . I have seen this insect again today . . . must be liking the plants in my garden!
