Winter project

Inspired by Shirley, I'm hoping to learn about botanical painting this winter ...

That's fascinating to me - artistic people are the most interesting and inspiring people. I have a blog full of sketches/paintings that I love to go back to.

Paul, do you have some of your own work that you could share with us? I’m also inspired by artists, particularly Van Gogh, Matisse and Turner.

A lovely thing to do, I hope you enjoy :)

I shall look forward to seeing the results! Good luck!

Thanks Hywel … have you ever tried it?

Thanks Ange, but I think it will be quite tricky so don’t hold your breath!

I hope you enjoy this project Sheila - I have never tried painting anything at all as am sure the results would be less than pleasing!

You never know, Shirley? I’ve always fancied giving it a try, so am hoping my old watercolour tubes won’t be too dried out …

Fine detail Sheila great for focusing then. Bet you'll love it. I'm still enjoying Anna Masons emails, her studies are wonderful....

Thanks Janey .. I’ve watched a few of Anna Masons videos, so now that I’ve got my paints out maybe I’ll try them!

I did some of what could be called botanical art in school Sheila because I took Botany A level, and our teacher was very particular that we had our diagrams and illustrations correct, so I became very observant as to the details in flowers etc and looking at specimens through a microscope. I still enjoy drawing plants.

That sounds great Hywel, what an interesting subject to study. Our choices were quite limited - certainly no such thing as Botany A level 🙂. Well I shall just have to make up for lost time …!

Looks a lovely book Sheila. I hope you enjoy trying. That's what it's all about, isn't it.

Have fun, get creative and painting is a good way of really studying the subject, and if you don't get it looking just exactly like a photo, it doesn't matter, you have put your heart and soul into the picture.

Thank you Josee :)

Thanks Linda - that's a lovely comment :)

Thanks Sheila, I'm really not an artist, but I love to admire the work of others. Van Gogh, Norman Rockwell, Rembrandt & Jan van Eyck are a few I studied at school and their works are on display at the Met and are truly inspirational. I'll post a few from my blog of botanical artists from a New York Botanical Garden art exhibit.
