Dinner plate fig. (Ficus dammaropsis)

This is from the highlands of New Guinea where it makes huge leaves and the largest figs of any Ficus tree on Earth. Look close and you can see two green figs- not full sized yet.
Both the fig and leaves can be eaten or cooked. But basically that's for native dishes as nobody has written the big figs taste very good. Leaves are good to wrap food in and then cook.
This is a very young plant and the plant itself even in habitat is a small tree..under 30' max and I expect not even half that here in the bay area.

It can grow fast once established. It looks great!

It was barely rooted when I got it 2 springs ago. Still wrapped in moss I could see with potting soil around it. So it took a year for the rootball to knit together then I planted it last summer.
I'm going for Ficus fun these days. I want to plant the Ruby Ficus in order to save water because once that roots in,it can grow fine on average to less water. Just prune it..all the time.

Love the large leaves and the lush green colour. Figs are definitely good for the ‘digestive system’…😉

I like the big leafed plants and without trying I notice that over the years i've collected red plants. Don't know why-ha.
