Beautiful animal, but ehhh you can keep him. On Long Island, there's an overpopulation and the whole herd will ravage the garden in about 5 minutes leaving nothing behind. They'll even strip the bark from the trees. They don't care who sees them.

Lovely creature and obviously they are hungry, especially when it's cold and they are trying to keep warm poor things. Remember we've taken over their land space with our homes Paul.

Beautiful pic, Klahanie. I do hope the little fellow managed to get something to eat...looks like he's having some greenery or berries?
A very festive looking photo. Thanks for sharing

Lovely to see Klahanie. One came into our garden when we were in Sooke, on your island … with her young. We felt quite honoured 🙂.

Poor Bambies :( I hope they can find enough to eat.

Long Island still has many large swaths of undeveloped land which are protected and all those lovely gardens. The deer have an abundance to eat & they are protected by law with no natural predators to keep them in check. You can't touch them even when they invade your property and decimate your vegetable garden. You'll have to install a big fence all the way around, but no traps or poison.

Thank you all for your comments.
Sheila I just had a mama and her young here this morning.
There is lots of snow here at the moment and hard to find food,
As Bathgate says they do not have a natural predators around here either. The only enemies are cars and trucks. The occasional cougar is removed by wildlife people very quickly.
They sure can decimate one's garden in one night. We have no fence around the property and I do like to see them. I found out that they are actually trainable (sort of) if I take time to do it. The resident "lady" will stay away from my garden but there are lots of interlopers and I cannot control all of them. I am trying to live in harmony with them. I will chase them from areas where I grow but if I'd really want to grow roses or veggies I would have to fence the area so I am constantly searching for plants which are not on their favourite list. Although, in times like these they will munch on everything even plant which are poisonous to them. First time in almost 20 years here they stripped our Boston ivy from the retaining wall in our very dry last summer.. It was a shock. Anyway, they keep me on my toes .
I do have a love-hate relation with them.

Beautiful photo Klahanie, I hope he can find food which doesn't include your plants!

I love to see them out in the boonies. They are very graceful and the buck is stunning with his full rack of antlers - and pulling Santa's sleigh full of toys for all the good little girls and boys. That's where I like to see them, but my tiny garden isn't nearly big enough.

A beautiful picture. Pidgeons are bad enough here so I cant imagine the damage they can do to gsrden plants.
