may not eat your hosta depending on what they are. Need to id this to satisfy my curiosity.

They are magpie moth caterpillars. According to the Butterfly/moth conservation they feed on the following:

Currant and gooseberry bushes (Ribes spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), Hazel (Corylus avellana), Garden Privet (Ligustrun ovalifolium), Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) and Bramble (Rubus fruiticosus)

so your hosta is safe.

Thank you, Eileen! That’s fab info. They were on the variegated euonymus! I’d lollipped the shrub yesterday and discovered I’d disturbed so many of these caterpillars!

It’s difficult isn’t it! I didn’t want to toss them to high heaven! But I was keen to remove them, safely! Discreetly, I nudged them over to one of the neighbours 😉
