Now it dies? Huge trunk.

Lindax,

Yes, it’s the flower spike. The plant will die after it flowers, but should create a lot of babies along the bottom of the plant and plantlets among the flowers.

They are wickedly sharp tipped. I already have to prune mine between the Mangoes. It might have to be removed one day,but not sure.

It’s a nice plant to look at, but definitely not to own. I don’t like spikey plants, overall. Except for the few cacti, and Euphorbia. I do have a lot of pineapple plants in the ground, though. I usually cut the leaf tips. I love homegrown pineapples!

Fantastic! I had an agave once, a bluish grey colour. It flowered, a tall spike of ‘only’ 6 feet. It died afterwards and any chance of new growth was scuppered by the long snowfall that winter. 2010-2011.

Kate,

That’s Agave americana you had growing. It grows wild here on the mesas and canyons. The flower stalks are usually 30 ft (9 m) tall.

Thank you, Andy! I wouldn't have had a clue!

Yes, so many species of Agave grow here and several naturalize.
