The giant fishtail palms loved all the rain this past year in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. Photo taken June 7, 2023.

I once saw a photo of one of these next to a home like mine...and it pretty much covered the whole roof. They have a short lifespan I hear like 10 years. So its up to the gardener if thats long enough.

Yes, it’s a gigantic palm. The lifespan of this palm is more like 40 to 60 years. My friend in Oakland had his since the mid-80’s (when it was called: Caryota obtusa) It’s flowering right now.

It’s a pretty common palm here. There’s also Caryota mitis, urens which are widely planted.
