We've had black Ladybirds like this on our apple tree and pale red ones as well. They are doing a great job of eating the aphids. They are according to my book Adalia bipunctata and can be seen from two to more spots with variable colours from red to black. Hope this helps.

Thanks Linda, I think you're right. This doesn't have the M shaped markings on its head as the Harlequin ones do. It's good to know these are our native ones too. I hadn't seen.a black one for many years, and in the north they do like to sunbathe, the black taking in more heat for energy. I'm pleased you have them too, getting rid of your aphids! Tell you what we've had so much of this summer...white fly. Puffs of them on my crab apple and hydrangeas.

Yes Janey we have the white fly around here too.
