Many of these trees are in full bloom all over Southern California. This is one of many growing at South Coast Botanical Garden in Torrance, CA. Photo taken September 18, 2024.

Yes, it has big thorns on the trunk, branches and it does produce a lot of kapok. The kapok looks like big cotton balls hanging on the tree.

It's gorgeous! That bloom colour is pretty vivid against the blue backdrop.

Los Angeles widely plants them as street trees and along the freeways.

I remember this tree with a "spikey" trunk and fluffy cotton like hanging balls (in Mexico). Am I righ?
