I was able to root two crotons from my large plant in my front yard. I finally planted them into pot today, as it was perfect weather, 80 degrees f (27 c) today. Photo taken December 7, 2024.

I've always wanted Croton, I think I'll treat myself to one in the new year :)

Bushbernie,
Thanks! I’m going to get a few more cuttings soon.
I’ve never tried croton seeds in the past. I’m going to plant some next spring.

Shirley tulip,
Thanks you! I hope they will adjust to the new soil!

Hywel,
It’s definitely worth it. There’s so many varieties for sale.

I sort of gave up. The best croton for hardiness i tried was an angel wing type. Not as colorful as Delonix's..but made it through winter to the early spring with foliage only to have a family member use saved water that had soap in it to water that plant. It wilted in 24 hours. I was not a happy camper.

Oh no! What a shame Stan. The family member was obviously trying to help but it all ended in disaster.

Stan,
Actually, Angel Wing croton is considered one of the most tender and cold-sensitive varieties. I think Mammy, Petra and Gold Dust are considered the hardiest varieties for California (from what I read).
I have these little croton cuttings indoors until Spring. I want their root-system to develop stronger until I put them outside.

Interesting that you have got them to root in water! Hope they adapt to the compost & grow away for you!

So far they are doing very well. I think they’ll be big and strong to go outside by early Spring.

I hope you have good luck with them!

I tried mammy Delonix. It survived the winter but didnt grow much in its second summer..then died.
I'm shocked that a moth orchid on the porch is in full bloom here in the third week of December on a sunny 66f day.

The SF Bay Area is still not warm enough for crotons. I know it’s getting warmer, but not warm enough yet.
My crotons are growing and flowering like crazy, right now. We’ve had record highs throughout San Diego County in the last three days. Mid-80’s for a lot of inland areas, low 80’s here where I live.

Oh excellent work Delonix. I'm taking cuttings tomorrow and trying them out in water this time. The ones I popped in seed raising mix seems to be doing okay but the root systems are still in their infancy just yet.
