We had one fly into our greenhouse last year. It panicked and was fluttering around like mad but eventually, after about 10 minutes, it managed to find its way out. Is this a greater or lesser spotted woodpecker and how can one tell the difference?

This is a Greater Spotted Woodpecker. You can tell by the red abdomen which the lesser spotted doesn't have. Oh and this is a male - red patch on the nape of the neck

Love this photo we sometimes on the rare occasion see this bird in the garden and on a walk over the Christmas holiday saw one in the trees down Wyver Lane down the road from here.this year have had a pair of Jays visiting.

Very fine looking woodpecker. I enjoy watching the birds in my yard, and try to take photos of them, before they fly away.
