There’s several of these giant fishtail palms at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens. It’s a huge palm which is widely grown in mild climates all over California. It typically only lives 30 to 40 years and blooms, then dies. Photo taken February 19, 2025.

Kate,
They become very large trees.
I just noticed the Australia tree ferns which is blocking the closer fishtail palms.

Been so long since I've been there.Without a doubt it has more of a tropical look these days.
That might be Cyathea brownii. The trunk's thickness and dark color could be it. Not sure since all tree ferns thrive in S.F.

Yes, so many tree fern in Golden Gate Park.
I hadn’t been to SF Botanical Gardens in probably 17 years. I cannot believe the growth on some of the trees and plants. There’s several pretty large Howea fosteriana; belmoreana there.

Lovely tree fern, Andy, but not for me though,it would block all light to the balcony & besides there would be no room for anything else! How would I water it??? I'd have to push a hosepipe out through the living room windows to reach it! :D :D :D

It’s funny everyone is commenting on the tree fern instead of the palms. 😂
Tree ferns can grow very large in California. Some genera can grow to more than 50 ft (15 m) tall. They’re definitely not recommended for small spaces.
