Orange Amaryllis

Orange Amaryllis (Orange Amaryllis)

My orange amaryllis is finally flowering. It typically flowers in late March or early April. This plant has evergreen leaves in a pot on my side wall all year. Sometimes this plant will flower twice a year. Photo taken April 25, 2025.

It's a beautiful Amaryllis flower! :)

Thanks 🙏

It only has two flowers. It will bloom two or three times a year, though.

My neighbor has a spectacular red one flowering now. She has done no watering nor fertilizing. It’s been in the ground for a quite a few years. I’m going to post a pic.

It would obtain all the nutrients it needs from the ground. After all in the wild nobody fertilises plants & they grow perfectly well! :D

You’re correct. I see many blooming in people’s gardens around San Diego right now. I need to get some different color Hippeastrum.

I've had red, white & striped from which I obtained my own seed which when sown gave me some interesting colours. I especially liked the ones that had red veining on a white background - no two were identical, (when they flowered for the first time that is), which I haven't seen for sale in the shops.

From my hybrids one of the first to flower had beautiful cherry red flowers with a white stripe down the centre of the petals.

Yes, seed is always variable for color. There’s so many varieties grown outdoors here. I need to trade some people for some interesting colors.

We can only grow them outside from May to October here. Though mine stayed outside on the balcony all winter this year but they were kept very dry & in the corner that's most protected.

I like this colour, Andy. I’m more orange than red like your neighbour. You’re fortunate it’s evergreen over there.

They can also be evergreen here, Kate. If you keep them in a frost proof window they will stay green all winter but they will just go into hibernation & not make any growth till the spring. All my plants stayed green this winter.

Balcony,

That’s great that your Amyrillis are doing so well. It’s typically an easy plant to grow.

Kate,

My neighbor’s is bright red. This one in the pic is mine. I’m going to trade my neighbor mine for her bright red.

I typically like Crinum hybrids better than Hippeastrum because they bloom many times year-round. The flowers are very sweetly fragrant, also.
