Yes lori although they look clumbsy on land they are fantastic flyers, they show little fear of man and you can get very close to them to take pics

are these the birds whose down is so valuable and insulatory? Are Puffins, Eiders?
Nothing like answering your own questions, aye? just took a peek at Wikipedia and they had a pic of an eider Duck it looks like a very sleek motor launch...black and white and classy all over...lol. I like Puffins better. they look like little face-painted penguins. kinda...sorta...

Lori, Islander will probably tell you more, but puffins and eiders are different birds.
The eider is a heavily built marine duck, while the puffin is a small auk, with the comical clown-like face which makes it a popular attraction for tourists to photograph.

you are right terra ,also the puffin nests in burrows on or near the top of cliffs. the cliff tops have to have soft soil for them to burrow into which is why they nest on some cliffs and not others. thy will also take over rabbit burrows to nest in. The puffin population is at risk now due to the commercial fishing of sandeels.
