This Jelly Palm has a giant bird of paradise growing in its leaf base.
I've seen ferns and ficus growing in these palms old leaf bases...but never giant bird of paradise.
The Jelly Palm has copious amounts of edible fruit that taste like pineapple. This palm grows everywhere in California except for the high-mountains. It can even grow into the foot hills of the Sierra Nevada. It has survived temperature down to 10 degrees (-12 degrees C.)

I've never read that they are grown commercially in California...however, in South America they are grown commercially for Jelly, Wine and other uses.
