What have you scattered between the plants?
Just shredded wood pieces,
or other items mixed in ?

Terratoonie, It's just shredded wood chips used as a mulch, as they rot down on the soil the larger pieces last longer on the surface and tend to get bleached in the sun giving them a silvery appearance.
