That's lovely.
Reminds me of what we've missed this year.

Hmmm, seems so long ago since it was like this. For the last 5 years we've had mallards nesting on the island in the middle of the pond. We dont even know they are there until the mother plops down onto the water with about 12 tiny chicks following her. Truly magnificent.

~ that's lovely -do they all survive?
~Next year I'm hoping to create a mini pond with a mini waterlily in a Belfast sink.~

No unfortunately they don't all survive :-( The first year just one reached maturity, the 2nd year 3 and last year none. Apparently crows will come down and get them and we think the fox is a major culprit, then there's the heron, he will pick them up too. All very sad but that's nature I suppose.
Arlene: the mini pond sounds a good idea.

Thank you M. Our place is probably a bit TOO natural for some, it is certainly not manicured but we like the natural feel, which fits in nicely with our timeframe, Lol. I don't intend strimming any nettles down this year as the butterflies need them to lay their eggs and the grass can grow long around the base of the trees for the mice etc. and I will not be using slug pellets - we try our best dont we?! I've not looked at this photo for a long time and its hard to believe it will ever look like this again, did you see the latest pond shot taken on Monday?

I like it Jacque - it does create me alot of work even though it tends to look after itself. Can you believe that most of the plants have arrived on their own - like the small bullrushes you can see at the front (bottom right) and the big bullrushes. I set the yellow irises at the edge of the island - its 50 metres long would you believe! But looks much smaller with the plants growing around the edges.
