Such a nice evening with the full moon and my little cabin perched in the, sorry folks, freezing snow. :-)

Just log. The roof and floor I'd guess are about 12 inch of insulation. Thats standard for homes. But the logs are just stacked up. Just as raw and orange on the inside. They of have insulation squashed between them and chinked in cracks. Temp gets much lower and you can find a hole like nothing, cold just blows in. None of that in this cabin. :-)

Well done you! Was a bit concerned about you going from "tropical" to below freezing. You used the expression "cold skin" - not sure what this means.
Ps maybe you look after your plants better than you?!

Skin surface just goes numb or something. I've lost the shock feeling. I always think, oh, its warm, and look and its -5 or something. lol. It's warm inside and I'm doing fine. :-) Thank you for the concern Michaella :-

Gt, do you have heat inside...like a fireplace or electric heating or something?

Of course theres heat...lol. The tank on the outside is deisel and I've a little stove inside that heats using the fuel. I am running a little electric radiator to suplement this year, since fuel had gotten so high. My cat loves it.

Greenthumb,
Do you live in Central or Northern Alaska?
How do you cope with the long cold nights?
I would go nuts if I couldn't go outside and garden
year-round! I guess I'm a little spoiled though. LOL.

Extreme heat happens in the North too! If anything we get all the weather that the more temperate climates get just more extremes in the same period of time! for instance: What's your average temp at the beginning of August...and the average temp at the end of August, GT? believe it or not our heat in northern Ontario was electricity!!! It went off once after a mid winter storm and the hundreds of miles of lines had to be checked to find the problem...the whole town was in the deep freeze (those of us without fireplaces or woodstoves) and it got mighty chilly after a few hours. in the dark! They use helicopters routinely for emergencies. the only way to cover the distances in a timely fashion. The R value of code insulation up there was R20 and lots of it! waterpipes would rupture and have to be thawed and repaired with propane. Just the place for cocooning!

Delonix, I'm in central alaska, the interior. My high pressure sodium lamp is my paradise all winter. On and 5:30 off at 8. Keeps me and the jungle in one serious microclime! lol.
Lori, I just can't get my head around only electric heat! Whoa! Here the static from the dry and electric would fry your appliances! lol. I got caught by an avalanche when I lived down on the coast, we couldn't leave town and the power was out. Lucky it was only around 20-30 each day. Not easy going. Thanks for the story, that imagery will stick with me for a while. :-)

I still think that its a beautiful place to be. I couldn't live without the lamp either. I love your beautiful little cabin and the warm light that radiates from it. It looks like the sun shine all caught up inside. Everyone who goes by must want to come in and share it!

Is your home insulated in any way? I find the degrees of cold you describe difficult to comprehend. I like the cold, but probably could not tolerate such depths. Would really like to see snow again in the UK.
