Jacaranda mimosifolia - Jacaranda in bloom

Jacaranda mimosifolia - Jacaranda in bloom (Jacaranda mimosifolia - Jacaranda in bloom)

This Jacaranda doesn't know its Dec. 6, 2008!!! These trees just don't usually bloom this time of year. Spring is the big bloom time and late Summer for a lighter bloom. I saw this same tree blooming last year at Christmas time. Extremely unusual!

Marguerite,

These trees bloom in Spring when they are completely leaf-less. The trees are just a complete mass of purple or blue...generally you can't even see the branches because of the millions of flowers. Some trees like my large 50 foot tree in my front yard will have a sporadic Summer bloom...however, it is extremely unusual for them to be blooming now.

I think it may have to do with our record high heat for the months of October and November.

Thanks for the comment.

Interesting that the tree seems to bloom at the wrong times.
In England, we are finding shrubs and plants confused about which season we are in !

I'm finding the same thing here. I'm seeing many trees that usually blooming at the ending of January or February blooming already. Maybe global warming???

Yes, I think a mixture of warm weather at unusual times, and also in England we had a really wet summer which has affected a lot of plants. See my latest photo of Garrya elliptica " James Roof " ( from my garden ) which seemed to really enjoy all the rain we had !

B lourenco:

You may be able to purchase one on the internet. I know every Country has their rules about importing plants.

I've read that these trees are sometimes used as an indoor in Europe...although it would never bloom as an indoor plant.
