Rhubarb pots

Those were the days Janey - can imagine teams of labourers running around as head gardener strutted his stuff waiting to take things up to the main house.

Am I right in thinking they try to maintain this traditional approach here ?

Rhubarb pots? I've never seen those before. Are they to cover the rhubarb over the winter???

Yes I have Bonkersbon , in West Yorkshire it,s a very serious crop and I believe very competitive , I have a good one which has spread a lot , I like it , a nice rhubarb crumble with cream or custard ...can,t beat it !

Hi BB.....Yes.....I think so..the greenhouses are Victorian...a heated one for agaves and succulents etc and I'm sure there is an Auricula stand in the cold greenhouse. They use traditional methods of gardening and most of the fruits and vegetables are the old types. The red brick building to the right is the potting shed and store and through that is a small room with table and range and coal fire burning in the Winter ready for the gardeners to have their 'snap'.

Gilli....the rhubarb pots are to cover the plants in Spring so that they are forced to grow towards the light to create long tender pink stems. I think they remove the lids when the leaves are coming through. I think the plants you can see there are artichokes.

Rhubarb is not all that popular over here in BC. Some people grow it but not many eat it. Strange really. I love it. Well......its in't blood init?

Ilove this pic, my ultimate dream would be to have a walled garden,oh well guess i'll just have to keep doing the lottery'.

Oh for crying in the street...we eat it here...ate it all my life...my sister just brought me a jar of her home made rhubarb sauce...it was wonderful...ours grew right of the cows manure pile, when I was a child..loads of oit grew there almost wild it seemed...we ate it right then and there...wonder I did not die of some terribe parasite or something...When Mom wanted to bake a pie we would be sent off to the cow manure pile to get enough for a pie!....LOL...I like the idea of the rhubarb pots a whole lot better...and they are very interesting to look at as well....

Ooh...I like the idea of rhubarb sauce Cat....mmmmmm....I love fruity sauces...plum, apple, peach and apricot with spices and meats....oh..stuff, now I'm starving! lol

I loved the sauce my sister brought...it was so good...I usually would have ate with pancakes or french toast but I just ate it...! I have missed having it all these years.

I never thought Rhubarb needed protecting. Love the stuff.
I now head back to the greenhouse that the buzzards delivered. I sure wish I could offer it as a trade in, for that one.

The pots aren't for protection Skyline they're for forcing. The greenhouse is stunning!

had never heard of rhubarb pots before either. Can see where it would make for tender stems tho. We do eat rhubarb here. However, it's not good for people with arthritis, same goes for celery. I used to work at BC Hydro's medical dept, and the Dr there told us about that, - also worked at GF Strong Rehab hospital and heard the same thing there.
