Looks stunning.
How large is this ?

Jacque - they are native to Australia so you won't see many over here

TT - the shrub can reach ten feet or more in ideal conditions - mine is about four feet after three years in front of a south-facing wall

Thats a lovely photo Andrew...almost looks like a white Callistermon

Yes, there is a resemblence. But it's actually part of the proteaceae family, the same as the proteas from South Africa. Callistemon is myrtaceae, the myrtles. Is there a professional botanist in the house?

Well done getting this th thrive away from the coast.

Wagger - this is possibly the hardiest banksia provided it has well-drained acid soil, low in phosphates. I had an euonymus growing in this spot for a few years before digging it out and incorporating about three bags of grit. According to Trevena Cross Nursery (from whom I bought it), it should take
-10C in the right conditions

WOW, I am impressed. I cannot believe you are growing this outside in the UK.

Andrew, You do know that rats pollinate it.

15 Dec, 2008

That's a relief - I thought it was kangaroos!

That answer was good. Big laugh. Then I thought. WAIT.

S. Africa!

perhaos 8 ft. Ostriches, but not Kangaroos

Rats remain the correct pollinizer as I remember..

I love this Andrew because it is so unusual looking....I love the different and unusual plants and blooms

Skyline - banksias comes from Australia, it's proteas that are found in South Africa. Although both genera are in the proteaceae family. I still like the idea of kangaroos pollinating them but I am prepared to believe it's rats that do the job

Acid again - sigh. A very interesting shrub, though!
