Having read Spritz's blog - we would agree that evergreens provide a backbone all-year-round. We prune plants to keep them to scale - this part of the garden is 16 years old. We keep the theme of red, blue and yellow throughout the winter. Red from Acer senkaki and from oriental ornaments; blue from the spruces, and yellow from aucuba, bright yews and ilex "Golden King" (which doesn't have prickles!) .

This is the formal part of our garden - the grass and paved area allow us to put out tables and chairs for open days and to put up a marquee for parties. The middle garden is the jungle and pagoda. The lower garden has a 54 foot stream and perennials in the summer. It is more shady from neighbouring large deciduous trees and nearer the boundary is more like a woodland.

We used to have two Rottweillers - "rotovators" we called them! They were like terrible twins - if they saw me planting something they had to investigate - and dig too! That, and with patches on the lawn, meant it was very difficult to have a smart garden. They grew old and died and the children wanted two labrador puppies. For a kennel, we bought a large wooden storage container with hinged lid and cut a hole in its side. We then had a long, hard think. On balance, it was the children who wanted the dogs, but they would soon be leaving home. We now use the "kennel" for storing garden equipment.

Is the Pond frozen?

It does look like a pond but it's a lawn

Yes, Marguerite - we have several blue spruces. We play with the colours red, blue and yellow - and they provide the blue! We've just come in from working in the garden - it's dark and the tiny white Christmas lights in the spruces look magical.
